Round 2

The 2nd day of the FIDE World School Championships at the Rodos Palace Resort Hotel went without any surprises.

Iceland’s support team (parents & trainers) has a special ritual that impressed everyone. Every time one of the Icelandic children finishes – have in mind that the girls are more than the boys (10 vs 3) – they are waiting for them applauding and cheering – regardless of their result.

In the U7 category, the without Elo rating Israeli Yoav Malkovich has achieved 2/2 by winning No1 & 3 of the starting ranking. In the U11 Kazakhstan’s Mark Smirnov (1st ЕLO 2061 initial ranking) lost to Canada’s Deshpande Sarthak in a drawn endgame. He ignored the cardinal rule, to activate his King. Watch the game here

It is worth noting that the U9 open category did not have a single draw in the 2nd round.

In the girls’ divisions things were more stable with the top ranked players not suffering significant losses and the battles being more balanced (elo differences/ final results).

Several players of the Greek team achieved the 2 out of 2. In the U7 category, Grigoris Panaretos, in O9, Grigoris Tamiolakis, in O11, Filippos Economopoulos, Yiannis Kirittopoulos, Mattheos Konstantinos Kazakis, in O15, Dimitris Papaioannou and Nikolas Poupalos, while in the girls category, only Evangelia Siskou maintains the ultimate scoring.

The first 5 boards of each category are broadcasted on the chess websites chess24.com and chess.com
